Accidents outside of Denmark

If you are involved in a motor accident outside of Denmark and you are not responsible for the accident, it is important that you obtain the following information about the opposite party:

- Name of the owner/driver of the vehicle
- Name of the insurance company
- Registration number
- Country of registration of the vehicle
- Make and model of the vehicle
- Date, place and country of accident
- Name and contact information of witnesses, if any

If the opposite party is driving a truck with a trailer, it is very important to note the registration number of the towing vehicle (the truck).

It is advised that you fill in and sign the international claims form in cooperation with the opposite party.

If you are not able to get all the relevant information, but you have the registration number of the other vehicle, The Danish Motor Insurers' Bureau (DFIM) can help you find the competent insurer:

Send an e-mail to Request@forsikringogpension.dk with the following information:
- Registration number of the opposite party's vehicle
- Make and type of the vehicle
- Country of registration of the vehicle
- Date of accident
- Place and country of accident

Personal Injury
If you have been involved in a traffic accident outside of Denmark – and if you are not the responsible party - you have the right to have your claim handled in your own country of residence. This rule applies to motor accidents that take place in an EU or EEC country.
All motor insurance companies in these countries have appointed a claims representative in Denmark. This Danish representative is obliged to forward your claim to the foreign insurance company. List of the Danish representatives.

Compensation rules of the country of accident
As an injured party you should be aware that any compensation is to be paid according to the laws and compensation levels of the country of accident.
If you are dissatisfied with the decision made by the country of accident, you have the option to bring your claim forward in court directly towards the foreign insurance company in its own country.

If you are responsible for the accident
You should give the other involved party information on your insurance company, and you can fill in the international claims form. Please note that both parties must sign the form for it to be valid.
