More about DFIM

Information centre
The Danish Ministry of Justice has appointed DFIM as Information centre in Denmark in accordance with the 2009/103/EC MID (Former 4th MID).

DFIM exchanges insurance details about motor vehicles – both when Danish insurance companies request these details about foreign vehicles and when foreign information centres approach us for insurance details about Danish vehicles.

Example A:
A Danish vehicle comprehensively insured in insurance company X is hit by a German vehicle in Germany. Insurance company X contacts the Danish information centre (DFIM) in order to obtain the insurance details of the German vehicle and the Danish claims representative of the German insurance company.  DFIM contacts the German information centre and requests the insurance details and the Danish claims representative. When received, the information is forwarded to insurance company X.

Example B:
A German vehicle is hit by a Danish vehicle in Denmark. The German information centre sends an insurance request to DFIM in order to obtain the insurance details of the Danish vehicle and the German claims representative of the Danish insurance company. We check with our database and provide the German information centre with the requested information.

The 2009/103/EC MID
According to the 2009/103/EC MID, a victim has the right to return to his/her country of residence and direct the claim to a national insurance company that speaks the victim's language. Therefore, all motor insurance companies in the EU have appointed a claims representative in each of the other EU countries. In our function as information centre, we must therefore inform the inquirer of the name of the insurance company of the offending vehicle and its the claims representative in the inquirer's country.

Green Card Bureau
DFIM is the national green card bureau of Denmark and therefore the guarantor of all foreign vehicles that cause damage in Denmark. Correspondingly, DFIM is also the guarantor of insurance cover of Danish vehicles in the other green card countries.

Compensation body
The Danish Ministry of Justice has appointed DFIM as compensation body in accordance with the 2009/103/EC MID. In connection with accidents taking place outside of Denmark, DFIM as compensation body handles claims when the offending party's foreign insurance company has not appointed a claims representative in Denmark. The Danish victim must then direct the claim to DFIM.

The Danish victim may also direct the claim to DFIM if the offending vehicle's insurance company, or the company's Danish claims representative, has not - within the period of three months - accepted or rejected the claim or noted that acceptance/rejection cannot be made without additional information. DFIM will then handle the claim instead of the foreign insurance company/the Danish claims representative.

Unidentified or uninsured foreign vehicle
If the accident which occurred outside of Denmark is caused by an unidentified or uninsured foreign vehicle, there is no Danish claims representative, to whom the Danish claimant may bring the claim. In such cases the victim should also direct the claim to the Danish compensation body (DFIM).

Guarantee Fund
If an uninsured or unknown motor vehicle causes damage in Denmark, DFIM is authorized to handle any claims that may arise. Read more.
